Sausage Bread

A Christmas morning tradition although my kids ask for this frequently. For substitution or an easier/faster way of prepping this, look at the notes section.

Notes

If fresh basil is unavailable, substitute 1 tsp dried basil.

For the dough…you can substitute for a pound of thawed frozen bread dough.

Ingredients

  • DOUGH

  • 1 cup water

  • 3 cups bread flour

  • 1-1/2 Tbsp. Dry milk

  • 2 tsp. sugar

  • 1-1/4 tsp. salt

  • 2 tsp. butter

  • 1-1/2 tsp. Active Dry Yeast

  • FILLING

  • 1 lb Italian sausage

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

  • 1 Tbsp fresh basil

  • 2 Tbsp parsley

  • 1 cup mozarella cheese, shredded

  • 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Directions

  • Put all of the dough ingredients into your bread machine (according to the manufacturers instructions) and set on the dough cycle. Should be about 1hr. 40 mins until it is done.

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a baking sheet.

  • Crumble and sauté sausage 8 - 10 minutes; until brown. Drain excess fat.

  • Roll out dough into a 12 x 9 rectangle.

  • Combine sausage with egg, basil and parsley. Spread evenly over the dough, leaving 1” boarder. Sprinkle with cheese.

  • Roll up in jelly roll fashion. Tuck ends under and place seam side down. Brush lightly with oil.

  • Bake 40 minutes or until loaf is light brown and sounds hollow when tapped. Cook and slice.
